Texas Hold’em: The World’s Most Popular Poker Game

Texas Hold’em is the general name for the most widely played form of poker in the world. From major international tournament series to home games and online platforms, Hold’em has become the global standard thanks to its simple rules, deep strategy, and endless variety of formats. While the core mechanics remain the same: two hole cards, five community cards, and the best five-card combination. The way the game is structured can change dramatically depending on the format however, something which we can only adore at The Festival Series!

Even though we often tend to promote our event as a Mixed Games event, we have proven to have a legion of Hold'em tournaments in each tournament schedule. There are even more Hold'em tournaments as Mixed Games available! The schedule features a legion of No-Limit Hold’em tournaments, alongside specialty formats such as Mystery Bounty, Progressive Bounty, traditional Bounty, Crazy Pineapple, Short Deck Hold’em, Deep Stack tournaments, and Heads-Up tournaments. Poker players are not all the same, therefore players can enjoy their own favourite format at our events.

Below is a breakdown of the main Texas Hold’em formats, and additional (bounty) features and/or tournaments.

All Hold'em Formats offered by The Festival Series

Limit Hold’em

Limit Hold'em uses fixed bet sizes for each round of betting. Instead of being able to bet any amount, players can only bet and raise in capped amounts. This structure is reducing variance compared to No-Limit Hold'em, keeps the pots more controlled, and places greater accents on hand selection, pot odds, and extracting value over many streets rather than clicking the all-in button and applying pressure. Limit Hold'em is often seen as a format for the purist's of poker: There are much less 'make them fold' moments, and more 'make the correct decision based on math' moments, making it a grat contrast with formats so as No-Limit. Limit Hold'em often tends to be forgotten, but it's absolutely one of the OG formats in poker, even more so, it's the game where it all began.

No-Limit Hold’em (NLHE)

No-Limit Hold'em is the flagship format of Texas Hold'em and the absolute foundation of every single major tournament in the world. In this structure, players may bet any amount of their chips at any time, including going all-in. This freedom creates maximum strategic depth. You need to think about stack sizes, pressure, timing your plays, and so much more. Because a single hand can decide a tournament run, or a cash game hand, NLHE is to be seen as dramatic, emotional, agressive, and endlessly appealing. At The Festival Series, No-Limit Hold’em forms the backbone of the schedule, offering constant action across multiple buy-in levels.

We would not want to leave this quote behind, as there is a very famous quote once given: ''The name of the game is No-Limit Texas Hold'em: The Game that takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master.''

Bounty (Knockout)

In Bounty tournaments, every player has a cash reward attached to their elimination. When you knock out another player, you immediately earn their bounty which in many casinos, you can directly stick in your pocket and/or cash out immediately. This format adds a second way to win money beyond finishing positions, encouraging looser calls and aggressive play. Standard bounty events at The Festival Series balance long-term tournament strategy with short-term rewards, making every all-in confrontation more meaningful.

Progressive Bounty (PKO)

Progressive Bounty tournaments take the bounty concept further. When a player is eliminated, part of their bounty is paid out immediately, while the rest is added to the eliminator’s own bounty. As the tournament progresses, successful players become increasingly valuable targets. This creates a super dynamic strategy and it gives constant action. At The Festival Series, this type of Bounty tournament is perhaps the most common one offered. As well, this format can be applied to many different formats, if not all formats.

Mystery Bounty

Mystery Bounty tournaments introduce an element of suspense and surprise. Once a certain stage of the tournament is reached, bounties are randomly assigned hidden values. This certain stage can differ at any poker tournament, but as we do at The Festival Series, we activate that stage once players are in-the-money (ITM). Eliminating a player reveals a mystery prize, which could be to a minimum amount, or massive. This format allows players to win significant cash without reaching the final table and injects excitement into every knockout. The Festival Series proudly includes Mystery Bounty events as one of the highlight of its Hold’em offering. At every full stop, you will find the Mystery Bounty tournament with multiple starting days.

Crazy Pineapple Hold’em

Crazy Pineapple is a Hold’em variant designed for action. Players are dealt three hole cards instead of two, then discard one after the flop. The extra card increases drawing possibilities and post-flop decisions, leading to larger pots and more creative play. Crazy Pineapple tournaments at The Festival Series offer a refreshing change of pace while retaining the familiar Hold’em structure. We call it the mixed game of Hold'em!

Short Deck Hold’em (6+ Hold’em)

Short Deck Hold’em is played with a reduced deck, typically removing cards ranked two through five. This change alters hand probabilities, making strong hands far more common and aggression far more profitable. Strategy shifts significantly, and players must adapt quickly. Short Deck Hold’em has become increasingly popular worldwide, and its inclusion at The Festival Series reflects the event’s commitment to modern, high-energy poker formats. One of the main adjustedments a player needs. to make in this game, is that the Ace counts as the '5'. Meaning that you can make a straight with A-6-7-8-9. Another main topic here is that the Flush is counted as a higher combination than the Full-House, this because it's harder to make a Flush in Short Deck poker.

Deep Stack Hold’em Tournaments

Deep Stack tournaments provide players with a large number of chips relative to the blinds, especially in the early stages. This allows for extended post-flop play, deeper strategy, and reduced reliance on short-stack all-in decisions. At The Festival Series, Deep Stack Hold’em tournaments are ideal for players who enjoy longer levels and a more methodical style of play. The Main Event can already be seen as 'Deep Stack tournament' in theory, as it has a very nice, comfortable, structure. However, we do offer standalone Deep Stack Tournaments, which you are most of the time even multi-day tournaments.

Heads-Up Hold’em Tournaments

Heads-Up Hold’em strips poker down to its purest form: one player versus one player. With blinds constantly in play and no opportunity to hide behind a full table, action is relentless. Heads-Up tournaments test adaptability, aggression, and psychological resilience. The Festival Series includes Heads-Up events for players who thrive in high-pressure, fast-paced battles. We often cap the total amount of entries, as most of these tournaments are being played in a best-of-three gameplay, and a bracket system.

Important Notes

What is important to know as well is that No-Limit Hold'em, and also the other formats, can be played in different structures. You have, for example, the Turbo version where the blind levels go a little fast compared to standard hold'em tournaments, and you have Hyper Turbo tournaments, where the blinds go even faster. On the contrary of these different types, you also have shortstack tournament, deep stack tournaments, and more. These types also have effect on the duration of a tournament.

Besides the blind structures and types of tournaments, you also have different tournaments when it comes to the entry of the tournament. You have the freezeout version which allows players to only enter the tournament once, you have the Re-buy tournaments where players can decide if they want to add another stack to their starting stack (and an add-on usually during the final break before the registration period ends), and you also have re-entry tournaments.

This last tournament, the re-entry tournament, has become the absolute standard in the entire world of live- and online poker.
